postcolonial theory

Definition

  • Postcolonial theory addresses the effect of colonialism on culture. Initially associated with literary analysis, in the 1970s, postcolonial theory focused first on Western colonial discourse, showing that colonial power took shape in areas of life such as literature, which are not initially obviously political.
