- Pregnancy prevention is defined as the practice of purposefully attempting to prevent unintended pregnancy through use of reliable contraception methods, such as hormonal contraception like birth control pills, condoms, or both, or abstaining from sexual activity. Overview Rates of teenage pregnancy in the United States are two to six times higher than rates in most of Western Europe, including France, Holland, Denmark, and Sweden, and two times higher than Canada.
