- THE 1980 PRESIDENTIAL election arrived on the heels of a tumultuous first term for President Jimmy Carter. During the previous four years, Carter had struggled with a major economic downturn, an energy crisis, increased foreign threats (particularly from Iran and the Soviet Union), and an overall decline in patriotism and morale among the American citizenry.
