Preferred term
purposeful physical activity
Definition
- Purposeful physical activity has been defined as activity that is performed to achieve an immediate goal such as transportation to work, completion of occupational tasks, or for pleasure. This entry reviews the origin and meaning of this term as defined above by William P. Morgan in 2001, alternative uses of the term in the health-related literature, and the rationale for a greater emphasis on purposeful physical activity as a way of increasing the levels of physical activity and associated health benefits in the population.
