racial formation

Definition

  • Racial formation is the social historical process by which racial categories are formed, inhabited, transformed, and rendered obsolete. Racial Formation Theory, pioneered by sociologists Michael Omi and Howard Winant in 1984, is founded on the premise that race is socially and historically rooted, rather than based on biological or fixed differences.
