Preferred term
racial profiling
Definition
- Racial discrimination by institutions and individuals has a long and sordid history in the United States, and racial profiling is one of the forms it has taken in the criminal justice system. Although a universally accepted definition of racial profiling does not exist, racial profiling typically refers to the practice of deciding whether to detain, search, arrest, or incarcerate individuals on the basis of their race, ethnicity, or national origin.
