Definition
- Recreation, defined as leisure-time activities including sports and commercial entertainment, has served many purposes in urban areas, including refreshment from work, opportunities for socializing with peers and building a sense of group solidarity, assimilation and Americanization of immigrants, and socialization of youth. Recreation has also influenced urban development, as exemplified by the rise of downtown commercial entertainment districts, the parks movement, and the growth of suburbs.
