Concept information
Preferred term
retention
Definition
- When students fall seriously behind grade-level achievement expectations at school, their parents, teachers, and other school personnel face difficult decisions about how to help them improve. Some parents and educators favor retention—that is, having struggling students repeat a grade—to give them time to mature or build their knowledge and skills in preparation for the next grade.
