Definition
- Before the 1960s it was a common practice to conduct prayer or Bible readings as devotional exercises in public schools. In the early 1960s the Supreme Court ruled that such activities violated the First Amendment principle of separation of church and state. [Source: The Supreme Court A to Z; School Prayer]
