separation: legal
Definition
- Black's Law Dictionary defines separation as “an arrangement whereby a husband and wife live apart from each other while remaining married, either by mutual consent or judicial decree.” What this really means in application differs from state to state; differences include how one becomes legally separated as well as what the status means for the married parties. One thing is consistent: A legal separation leaves the marriage intact. [Source: Cultural Sociology of Divorce: An Encyclopedia; Separation: Legal]
