Definition
- Informal settlements, known in various countries as shantytowns, favelas, barrios, and homelands, among other designations, house a significant proportion of urban residents in the Third World. Essentially illegal settlements, they nonetheless fulfill an essential role in the extremely rapid urbanization process currently underway in developing countries.
