Preferred term
sobadores
Definition
- A sobador is a traditional folk healer, masseuse, and therapist in Latino culture who treats common ailments such as constipation and diarrhea, as well as culture-bound syndromes such as empacho (a blockage of the stomach or digestive tract) and other digestive disorders by using therapeutic touch to relieve physical pain and by massaging the stomach and lower back to release blockages. The patient is counseled about proper diet and herbal remedies that will aid digestion. [Source: Encyclopedia of Multicultural Psychology; Indigenous Treatments: Sobadores]
