Preferred term

socioeconomic integration and segregation

Definition

  • Socioeconomic segregation occurs when wealthy and advantaged students generally attend schools separately from low-income and disadvantaged students. Socioeconomic integration involves efforts by school systems to overcome that separation with conscious policies that consider the economic status of students in deciding where children will attend school.
