Definition
- Sociolinguistics is the study of how social context and the identities of individuals and groups (“socio-”) shape and are shaped by the ways in which speakers employ language (“-linguistics”). Sociolinguists are interested in describing and, when possible, explaining the use of language in the communities of speakers who use that language to communicate.
