- With childhood obesity reaching epic proportions in the United States, physical education in schools and participation in sports may be one key to the development of lifelong habits of fitness. Children who engage in physical activity in early childhood may, without realizing it, be taking the initial step in preventing chronic illness and obesity in adulthood.
