Definition
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be characterized as a blow or jolt to the head or body that disrupts the normal functioning of the brain, and it is clinically defined by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification and International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification. Since the development of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) by Teasdale and Jennett in the 1970s, both adult and pediatric TBIs are routinely described as “mild,” “moderate,” or “severe” based on the GCS score assigned postinjury by a health care provider as part of the patient's initial evaluation and treatment.
