Definition
- In the history of medicine the lowest of the medical specialists (hence they were always ‘mister’ and not ‘doctor’), travelling with the army, working essentially as human butchers, amputating limbs and setting bones, and acting as barbers at other times. As anatomy and dissection developed though, the surgeons became key players in the development of modern medicine, since with knowledge of the body in death they could now make effective interventions in life.
