Concept information
Preferred term
sustainable fisheries
Definition
- The idea that fish can be harvested while maintaining yields and without permanent damage to future fish stocks. Though based on sound principles, such as the concept of sustainable yield, past and present experience generally does not support the viability of the idea in practice, largely due to the unwillingness of governments to take sufficient timely action, both individually and collectively.
