- On November 28, 1987, a 15-year-old African American female, Tawana Brawley, was found in a garbage bag outside her former residence in Wappingers Falls, New York (situated in Dutchess County, north of New York City), allegedly kidnapped and raped by six Caucasian males. Civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton advocated in support of Brawley throughout her subsequent ordeal, helping draw national attention to the case.
