Definition
- In relation to global change, the critical threshold or critical transition at which the internal dynamics of the Earth-atmosphere-ocean system begins to propel at a faster rate (possibly an uncontrollable rate and possibly irreversibly) changes previously forced by external factors. Features of complex dynamical systems, tipping points mark a sudden shift to a contrasting dynamical regime. [Source: Encyclopedia of Environmental Change; tipping point]
