- Tomato (LYCOPERSICON ESCULENTUM) is a member of the genus Lycopersicon and was categorized thus by the Swedish botanist Linnaeus. Its botanical name is literally translated from ancient Greek as “wolf peach,” which reflects the once widely held belief that the tomato was poisonous.
