Preferred term

underclass

Definition

  • The social class model of stratification is based on the ranking of occupations. There is thus the possibility of a population that falls below the lowest class because there are people who do not have jobs and (unlike many of those unemployed at any one time) have no employment history and very little prospect of ever acquiring an occupation.
