Definition
- The census defines urban areas and territory in order to provide statistics on the population living in cities and towns, or in city-like conditions, as opposed to rural or noncity territory. Prior to 1850, the census provided separate populations for many cities and towns but did not summarize them as a group. [Source: Encyclopedia of the U.S. Census; Urban Areas]
