urban riots
Definition
- Urban riots are major disturbances involving many residents and significant police response that immobilize an area of the city for several hours, and often days, resulting in significant destruction and deaths. They can be distinguished from protests, which are fundamentally peaceful in nature and usually focus on particular policies or actions of public officials, and revolutions, which may involve urban violence but ultimately aim to overthrow the state.
