  • Verstehen is the German word for “understanding.” It is indicative of a comprehension that is conceptually distinct and furthest away from explanation. Verstehen refers to participative understanding from the first person, from the case locals' point of view, in a never-ending process and taking into account history, culture, and previous understandings.
