  • Voluntary health agencies (VHAs) are private nonprofit groups that work “to improve health by providing patient and family services, community services, public and professional education, medical research support and health related advocacy,” according to the National Health Council, the umbrella organization for 115 health-related groups, 51 of them VHAs. Major VHAs include the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, and Easter Seals..
