Preferred term

whiteness and masculinity

Definition

  • With the emergence of women's studies and scholarship on race and ethnic issues in the 20th century, many scholars began to take a closer look at whiteness and masculinity, which had long served as the unspoken standards in Western society. They argued that whiteness and masculinity are both privileged statuses and that to be White or male is to have greater access to rewards and valued resources simply because of one's group membership.
