- The date of January 4, 2007, is one of the most significant in the history of women in American politics. On that day, the 110th Congress, with its Democratic majorities in the Senate and House, was sworn in—and on that day, on a party line vote, the House elected Democrat Nancy Pelosi of California as the first woman to hold the office of Speaker of the House.
