  • Free-floating heterotrophic organisms that are pelagic organisms, existing in the surface waters of the oceans or bodies of freshwater. In food webs, zooplankton generally are consumers of the phytoplankton (the primary producers). [Source: Encyclopedia of Environmental Change; zooplankton]
