- John William Hagen was born May 11, 1940, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Wayne S. Hagen, M.D., and Elfie M. Erickson Hagen. Hagen's father left his home state of South Dakota to pursue medical training at the University of Minnesota, where he met his wife, a nurse at the hospital where he interned.
