  • U.S. dancer and choreographer Martha Graham was instrumental in founding modern dance in America, and her artistic work ranks as one of the great cultural achievements of the twentieth century. The modern dance movement was part of the avant-garde direction of the arts in the early twentieth century that broke away from traditional, classical forms and stressed the invention of new artistic means of expression.
