  • Conformity (acting in accordance with prevailing standards or customs) involves a mental calculus by which socially supplied information is integrated with direct sensory inputs and prior experience in coming to a judgment or action. When confronted with an unfamiliar situation that requires a response, people typically consider three broad sources of information: past experience, direct perceptions of the important or relevant features of the context, and information supplied by others.
