cross-national perspectives on organized labor

Definition

  • Through most of the 20th century, discussions of labor movements treated labor movements in already industrialized countries as fundamentally different from those in the developing world. In the early industrializing societies of Europe, labor unions were generally seen as having been built upon the basis of already existing guilds and craft groups.
