deskilling and upgrading

Definition

  • Deskilling and skill upgrading offer competing viewpoints regarding the effects of technological change on workers, their skills, and the conditions under which they work. The ongoing concern is whether new technology in the workplace results in deskilling (a downgrading of work skills), the upgrading of work skills, or some combination of both deskilling and skill upgrading.
