  • Social science debate is now refocused on an old concept, that of empire. In the decades following the end of the cold war and the collapse of communism, some scholars, notably Chalmers Johnson, suggested that the empire theory best characterizes the rise of the United States as the hegemonic economic and military power in the post–cold war era.
