  • Filibustering was the attempt by American citizens to use armed force to expand their economic and political influence beyond the borders of the United States in the years prior to the American Civil War. This initiative, carried out by private citizens against the explicit laws of the United States, was directed southward toward Cuba, Mexico, and the Central American republics.
