  • The U.S. Army played an important role in the opening and conquest of the American West. Its responsibilities were varied: to explore and map the territory; to escort workers and facilitate the construction of railroads; to guard major highways and migration routes; to subjugate Native American peoples by force or treaty; to police and oversee Indian reservations; to prevent intertribal warfare; and to avert the outbreak of hostilities between Native American groups and settlers.
