intersectionality

Definition

  • Intersectionality is the notion that one social category cannot be understood in isolation from another social category. It grew out of criticism that antiracist and feminist movements in the 1960s and 1970s homogenized categories of race and gender. [Source: Encyclopedia of Communication Theory; Intersectionality]
