Definition

  • The belt of low pressure found near the Equator and formerly known as the intertropical front (see front) or equatorial low and, by mariners, as the doldrums. The ITCZ is a region of ascending air, visible on cloud images as a band of discontinuous convective cloud between the convergent trade wind systems.
