Preferred term

mass murder and suicides in cults

Definition

  • Although mass murders and mass suicides in new religious movements (popularly known as cults) have attracted media publicity, their occurrence is rare in proportion to the overall numbers of present-day religious organizations—at least 2,000 in the United States alone. This entry discusses some religious movements in which mass murders and/or suicides occurred and then assesses the commonalities among them.
