oxidation

Definition

  • The chemical definition is the increase in the positive valence or the decrease in the negative valence of an element, or the loss of an electron from an element: ferrous iron (Fe2+), for example, is oxidised to ferric (Fe3+) iron. In chemical weathering, this commonly means the combination of a mineral with oxygen to form oxides or hydroxides and usually involves atmospheric or soil oxygen dissolved in water.
