Preferred term

portrayals of children and adolescents in news

Definition

  • A growing cadre of scholars across a range of academic disciplines have taken up the study of the representational politics guiding mediated portrayals of youth, much of it focusing on news coverage of children and adolescents. In a nutshell, their research has documented a tendency on the part of journalists to define youth as a problem (framing youth either as risks or at risk themselves) while simultaneously silencing young people in stories about them.
