postmaterialism

Definition

  • Postmaterialism is a concept most often associated with the work of American political scientist Ronald Inglehart. In his books, The Silent Revolution (1977) and Culture Shift in Advanced Industrial Societies (1990), Inglehart argued that the growth of affluence in Western industrial societies in the decades following World War II had lead to a fundamental transformation of cultural and social values.
