postpartum depression

Definition

  • Postpartum depression is a serious disorder estimated to affect between 5 and 15 percent of mothers after giving birth, and—although not widely discussed—10 percent or more of fathers, especially first-time fathers. Often unrecognized and undiagnosed, this disorder has broad impact on the individual suffering from it, as well as on couples, families, and the bonding and attachment between parent and child.
