public hospitals

Definition

  • The public hospital is rooted in the traditions of the 18th-century almshouses that cared for the sick and poor and emerged as the backbone of our hospital system with the advances in treatments and nursing care during the Civil War. Today, of the almost 5000 community hospitals in the United States, approximately 1200 are public hospitals owned or operated by state and local governments.
