Preferred term

scope

Definition

  • Scope refers to the dimension of behavior affected by the exercise of power. The observation that someone has power does not tell us very much unless it also specifies answers to the following questions: With respect to whom (domain)? And with respect to what aspects of behavior (scope)? Some have even suggested that it is virtually meaningless to attribute power (or influence) to someone without specifying the scope.
