Preferred term

transvestism

Definition

  • Transvestism emerged as a term for cross-dressing when, in 1910, the physician and pioneering sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld published his work Transvestites. Like later works, Hirschfeld's study focused on male, rather than female, cross-dressing, in part because male cross-dressers received a disproportionate amount of attention from the general population.
