Definition
- Briggs v. Elliott (1952) was one of the five school desegregation cases that formed the basis of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education, Topeka, Kansas (1954). The story of Briggs demonstrates how a small, rural, African American community in Clarendon County, South Carolina, played a pivotal role in abolishing legal segregation in public education.
