Preferred term

Delaware

Definition

  • Delawareans take enormous pride in calling themselves residents of “The First State,” a reference to Delaware being the first of the original thirteen states to ratify the United States Constitution, which it did on December 7, 1787. Being “first” has also been important to the state's economy, as this tiny state has entrenched itself as the corporate capital of the nation.
