Foods Resource Bank

Definition

  • Seventy-five percent of the world’s 842 million hungry people live in rural areas, and half of them are farmers, according to 2013 statistics from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. However, the barriers to success that farmers face in the developing world are powerful—natural disasters, insect infestations or plant viruses, soil infertility, lack of capital or access to markets, scarcity of clean water, civil unrest, war, disease, and other desperate circumstances.
